Terraria Crossplay Server Hosting: What Works in 1.4.5.8

Hosting can keep a Terraria world online, backed up, and reachable, but it cannot create platform compatibility that the current game build does not provide. Official Terraria communication still treats native crossplay as future work, so plan around the exact platform and patch combination your group uses.

Crossplay Phase One is 1.4.6

As of the 19 August 2026 release announcement for 1.4.5.7, Re-Logic have named what comes next: "barring any critical fixes that would necessitate a 1.4.5.8, next up should be the long-awaited Crossplay Phase One update (1.4.6)". That is the first time crossplay has been attached to a version number rather than described only as future work.

Two caveats worth keeping in mind before you plan around it:

  • No date has been given. Re-Logic say they will have more on what it entails "in the near future". In the August 30, 2026 State of the Game they added that once 1.4.5.7 is out for console and mobile and has had a few days to prove stable, they will be "pushing directly into Terraria 1.4.6, which will be Phase One of Crossplay". Console and mobile received the patch on September 3 and 8, so that condition is now met. Phase One also implies later phases, so the first release is unlikely to cover every platform pairing.
  • It changes nothing today. Until 1.4.6 ships, everything on this page still applies - crossplay is not a server-side setting, and your group still needs a matching platform and patch combination.

The current line, as of September 17, 2026: 1.4.5.7 shipped for PC on August 19, 2026 as the last planned hotfix for the Bigger and Boulder update, 1.4.5.8 followed on August 23 for PC, and console and mobile received both as one update: Xbox, PlayStation and mobile on September 3, Nintendo Switch on September 8 (the official wiki's console version history records the dates). Every platform is on the same patch line again, which removes the version mismatch, not the platform barrier. The dedicated server download is versioned 1.4.5.8; the platform table and what is known about 1.4.6 are on the 1.4.5.8 crossplay status page.

Choose the right server path

GroupRecommended path
Same-platform vanilla playersVanilla dedicated server with matching 1.4.5.8-compatible desktop clients, or the matching supported patch for another platform.
Modded PC playerstModLoader with the same branch, mods, and versions on every client.
Administration and protectionTShock, if the current TShock release and plugins support your Terraria version.
Mixed PC, mobile, and console groupDo not promise native crossplay; follow current official announcements and test any community bridge separately.

Before you buy or migrate

  • Confirm the server software and exact client branch with every player.
  • Ask whether the host supports world uploads, backups, FTP/file access, and the server software you need.
  • Test a copy of the world before changing the live world or installing plugins.
  • Keep a downloadable backup before each game or server update.

Crossplay troubleshooting

If a player cannot connect, check the patch and server branch first. Then check the server console, password, firewall, and port. A faster CPU or a different region will not resolve a protocol or platform mismatch.
