How to Hotwire a Car in Project Zomboid (2026)

Project Zomboid: How to Hotwire a Car

In the post-apocalypse, finding a working car with a key is a rare luxury. Learning how to hotwire vehicles is a critical skill for any Project Zomboid survivor who wants to explore beyond their starting town.

Skill Requirements

To hotwire a car, your character must meet one of the following conditions:

  • Burglar Profession: Characters with the Burglar profession can hotwire any car from Day 1 without any additional skills.
  • Level Up: All other professions must reach Level 2 Mechanics and Level 1 Electrical.

Quick Leveling Tip: Level up Mechanics by uninstalling and reinstalling lightbulbs, radios, and batteries on every car you find. Level Electrical by dismantling digital watches, radios, and televisions with a screwdriver.

Why other guides quote different numbers

Search around and you will find people insisting the requirement is Electrical 2 and Mechanics 3. They are not making it up. The shipped game files contain both checks: the live one is Electrical 1 with Mechanics 2, and a stricter Electrical 2 with Mechanics 3 path sits right beside it, commented out along with the on-screen hint that used to say "You need keys or electricity level 2 and mechanic level 3 to hotwire". Only the first one runs, so Electrical 1 and Mechanics 2 is the requirement to trust, and the Burglar trait bypasses it either way.

Your server may have turned hotwiring off entirely

Before you grind two skills, check the server. The sandbox option Vehicle Easy Use makes every vehicle startable with no key and no hotwiring at all: the game checks that setting first and offers a plain Start Engine option to everyone, skill-less. If you can start cars on one server and not another, that setting is usually the reason, not your character. It is a world setting rather than a per-player one, so on your own server it is yours to decide; see all server settings and multiplayer settings.

Step-by-Step Hotwiring

1. Enter the Vehicle

Stand by the driver's side door and press E. If it's locked, you may need to smash a window (using a tool to avoid injury) or use a crowbar if you have a mod installed.

2. The Radial Menu

Once inside, hold V to open the vehicle's radial menu. This is the central hub for all car interactions.

  • Select the "Hotwire Engine" icon (the one with the crossed wires).
  • Your character will begin the hotwiring process. This may take several attempts depending on your skill level. Success is indicated by wires appearing in the ignition slot on your dashboard.
  • Each attempt takes 200 - (Electrical level × 3) ticks, so Electrical is what makes retries quick: 200 at level 0 down to 170 at level 10. It is also the skill the success roll itself reads, which is why Electrical is worth more than Mechanics here once you are past the gate.
  • You have to be in the driver's seat. The action refuses to start from any other seat, which catches people who climbed in through the passenger door.

3. Starting the Engine

After a successful hotwire, press W to start the engine. If the battery is dead or the engine quality is low, it may take multiple tries to turn over.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • No Gas: You cannot hotwire a car without fuel. Use a Gas Can to siphon fuel from other vehicles or fill up at a gas station (if the power is still on).
  • Broken Engine: If the engine health is 0%, no amount of hotwiring will start it. You will need to repair it with spare engine parts.
  • Dead Battery: If the car won't even click, the battery might be dead. You can swap it with a charged battery from another vehicle or use a battery charger if you have a generator running.
