Abiotic Factor Chemistry Guide: Distillations, Flasks and Coatings
Quick answer: chemistry is two benches, not one. Raw items go into the Distillation Bench and come out as Distillations. Three Distillations go into the Chemistry Bench and come out as a Coating, a Flask or a Tincture. Nothing else is involved: no water, no vials, no reagents, and no chemistry skill to level.
The pipeline
Almost every question about Abiotic Factor chemistry comes from missing this one step, including from players who have built both benches and still cannot make anything.
raw item -> Distillation Bench -> Distillation
Distillation x3 -> Chemistry Bench -> Coating / Flask / Tincture
The Distillation Bench on its own produces nothing you can drink, throw or apply. It only produces ingredients. If you built one and found it useless, that is why.
Building the two benches
Both are crafted at a Crafting Bench. Neither is gated behind a skill.
| Bench | Recipe |
|---|---|
| Distillation Bench | 4x Metal Pipe, 2x Quantum Glass, 2x Reinforced Wooden Plank, 1x Lab Burner |
| Chemistry Bench | 4x Metal Pipe, 4x Quantum Glass, 6x Reinforced Wooden Plank, 3x Lab Burner |
The Distillation Bench has an input flask on the left and an output flask on the right, and a red button on the front starts it. Look at the output flask to see progress. It has 750 durability, repairs with a single Metal Scrap, and salvages back into one Hose and one Metal Scrap.
The Chemistry Bench has three input flasks. Each holds up to 8 doses of one Distillation, so a single load can produce several outputs when the ratio fits. A red valve starts the mix.
The 16 Distillations
These are the only chemistry ingredients in the game. Fifteen are useful and one, Noxious Sludge, is what you get when the bench accepts an item that has nothing better to give.
Vigorous, Fizzy, Alien, Foggy, Brainy, Void, Mycological, Charged, Boiling, Expanding, Unnerving, Unstable, Occult, Endothermic, Fleshy, and Noxious Sludge.
How you are meant to discover recipes
You are not given a list. The bench accepts items it can process, and a successful result is recorded for you. That is the intended loop, and it is worth saying plainly because a lot of players stall here waiting for a clue that never comes. Feed it things and watch what happens.
The same applies at the Chemistry Bench. A combination the game does not recognise does not fail silently, it hands you an Unstable Flask. A failed experiment still produces an item, so nothing is wasted outright.
Three recipes worth knowing
These are confirmed against the current game data. The rest of the catalogue is discovered in play, and we would rather list three you can rely on than reproduce a table we cannot stand behind.
| Result | Mix | Output | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acid Coating | 6x Unstable, 6x Boiling, 6x Alien | 1 | The weapon deals bonus Acid damage on hit, worth 25 percent of the weapon's own damage. |
| Restorative Flask | 2x Mycological, 2x Fizzy, 4x Vigorous | 3 | A healing cloud giving 60 HP a second for 2 seconds, 120 in total, to players and pets. Instantly stops bleeding at any level inside the cloud. |
| Pheromone Flask | 6x Alien, 4x Mycological, 4x Brainy | 2 | Pacifies lower order Anteverse creatures on impact. Used with food to tame Pests and Peccaries, and works on Skinks. |
Note the output counts. The Restorative Flask returns three per mix and the Pheromone Flask two, so the eight-dose input limit is worth planning around rather than mixing one at a time.
How coatings actually wear out
A coating starts with 100 durability and loses it at the same rate as the weapon underneath it. It is not a fixed number of swings, which is the assumption that makes people think coatings are worse than they are.
The practical consequence is that a coating lasts as long as the weapon it sits on is cheap to maintain. Put one on something that barely degrades and it stays for a long time. Crafting skill helps here too: every point reduces the chance of an item losing durability by 2 percent, and that applies to the coating as well.
The twelve Flasks
Blizzard, Charging, Concussive, Corrosive, Holy, Megaton, Panic, Pheromone, Portal, Restorative, Unstable and Updraft.
If you are looking for a Caustic Flask, there isn't one. The acid options are the Corrosive Flask and the Acid Coating.
Chemistry and pets
Two items connect chemistry to companions, and neither involves applying anything to the animal directly.
- Restorative Flask heals pets as well as players, and stops their bleeding. Thrown at your feet during a fight it covers both of you.
- Pheromone Flask is the taming tool. It pacifies lower order Anteverse creatures, and together with the right food it is how Pests and Peccaries are tamed.
Running chemistry on a server
Chemistry adds no server settings and no configuration of its own. The benches are ordinary placed objects and the crafting happens where the player is. If you are hosting for a group, the only thing worth planning is storage, because Distillations accumulate faster than most people expect once everyone starts experimenting.
A managed Abiotic Factor server keeps the world running between sessions, which matters here because chemistry rewards stockpiling ingredients over several play sessions rather than one sitting.
