Food Preparation Table Valheim (1.0): Build Cost, Recipes and Feasts

Quick answer: the Food Preparation Table is a mid-game Valheim cooking station that costs 5 Iron, 20 Finewood and 15 Leather Scraps and is built inside a Workbench’s range. It does four jobs and only four: it prepares uncooked foods for the Stone Oven, it crafts feasts, it turns any fish into Raw Fish, and it makes fishing bait. It does not cook anything by itself, and it is not an upgrade to your Cauldron.

Because it needs Iron, this is not a Meadows starter station. In practice you unlock it around Swamp progression, once you have a Smelter running and Finewood from birch or oak.

Build cost and placement

  • Iron x5
  • Finewood x20
  • Leather Scraps x15

It has to be placed within range of a Workbench. It has 100 durability and it takes rain damage, so put it under a roof unless you enjoy repairing it. Unlike the Cauldron it does not need a fire underneath.

What the Food Preparation Table actually does

  1. Stone Oven preparations. It turns ingredients into an uncooked item (dough, an unbaked pie, an uncooked platter) that then goes into a Stone Oven to become the real food.
  2. Feasts. The large shared meals, one per biome, that several players eat from a single serving.
  3. Raw Fish. It processes any caught fish into Raw Fish for cooking or crafting.
  4. Fishing bait. Every bait variant is made here.

Which Valheim station does what

This is where most confusion comes from. Valheim’s kitchen is split across several stations, and a recipe lives on exactly one of them.

StationWhat it does
Cooking Station / Iron Cooking StationCooks raw meat and fish directly over a fire.
CauldronSoups, stews and finished multi-ingredient dishes. Costs 10 Tin, needs a fire source underneath, and upgrades to level 6.
Food Preparation TableOven preparations, feasts, Raw Fish, and bait. No cooking, no levels.
Stone OvenBakes the prepared items into finished food.
Fermenter / Mead KetillMead bases and fermenting. Nothing to do with this table.

No, you cannot upgrade the Food Preparation Table

It is a level 1 station and it stays that way. Nothing you build next to it raises its level, and there is no comfort or proximity bonus that unlocks extra recipes on it.

The reason people expect otherwise is that the Cauldron does work like that. A Cauldron levels up to 6 by having the Spice Rack, Butcher’s Table, Pots and Pans, Mortar and Pestle, and Rolling Pins and Cutting Boards built near it. Those are Cauldron extensions. They do nothing for the Food Preparation Table. The Stone Oven, likewise, is a completely separate station, not an attachment.

You will probably still build them all in one room because it is convenient. That is a kitchen layout choice, not a mechanic.

Every Food Preparation Table recipe

Make the uncooked item here, then bake it in a Stone Oven. Every one of these bakes in 50 seconds.

Fish and bait

The table also turns any fish into Raw Fish, and it is where every fishing bait variant is crafted. If you have just built the table and this is all you can see, that is normal, and the next section explains why.

The workflow, with a worked example

The prep table never gives you edible food on its own. The chain is always the same:

Ingredients → Food Preparation Table → uncooked item → Stone Oven → finished food

For a Lox Meat Pie:

  1. At the Food Preparation Table, combine Cloudberries x2, Lox meat x2, Barley flour x4 into an Unbaked lox pie.
  2. Put the unbaked pie in the top slot of a Stone Oven with wood in the bottom slot.
  3. After 50 seconds you get a Lox meat pie: 75 health, 24 stamina, 4 hp per tick, lasting 30 minutes.
  4. Take it out. If you leave it in past 100 seconds it burns into Coal.

The Stone Oven, briefly

Since half of this table’s output needs one:

  • Build cost: Iron x15, Stone x20, Surtling core x4. No Black Marble is involved.
  • It is unlocked once you smelt Iron for the first time, and it must be placed inside an Artisan Table’s range.
  • Two inputs: wood goes in the lower one, the item in the upper one. It holds 10 wood and bakes up to four items at once.
  • Each wood burns for 2000 seconds, about 33 minutes, so a full load runs roughly five and a half hours.
  • Unlike the prep table, the Stone Oven does not take rain damage.

Why is Bread, Lox Pie or Misthare Supreme not in my Cauldron any more?

Because they were moved. When the cooking system was split up, anything that needs a second baking step left the Cauldron for this table, and mead bases went to the Mead Ketill. Nothing was removed from the game.

If a recipe you remember has vanished, check in this order: is it a Cauldron dish, is it a prep-table item that then needs the Stone Oven, or is it a mead base. That covers nearly every “my recipe disappeared” case.

Why does my Food Preparation Table only show Raw Fish?

Building the table does not unlock its whole catalogue at once. Work through this list:

  1. Have you picked up every ingredient at least once? Valheim gates recipes behind discovering the materials, not behind the station.
  2. Have you reached the right biome? Most prep-table recipes are Plains tier and later.
  3. Have you bought the spice? Every feast needs a spice from The Bog Witch. No spice, no feast recipes at all.
  4. Is it actually a Cauldron recipe? Soups and stews never appear here.
  5. Do you have a Stone Oven? The prep table will happily make you an unbaked pie you cannot bake.

Feasts and the Serving Tray

Feasts are the reason to build this table on a shared world, and they work differently from every other food:

  • A crafted feast cannot be eaten from your inventory. You place it with the Serving Tray, on the floor or on a table, choosing which feast from the tray’s build menu.
  • A placed feast has 10 servings, which is what makes it a group meal rather than a personal buff.
  • Its model visibly changes as it is eaten, at six servings, three, and empty.
  • When it is empty, clear the platter with the Serving Tray’s Remove function.
  • Do not dismantle a half-eaten feast. A partially eaten one returns nothing at all.

What Valheim 1.0 and the Deep North changed

Valheim left early access on 9 September 2026 with the 1.0 update, followed by hotfixes 1.0.10 and 1.0.12 on 11 September. For a kitchen, the parts that matter are:

  • A ninth feast: Northern Morning Fare, the Deep North entry, crafted at this table like the rest.
  • 20+ new food items, including Cooked Moose Meat, Smoked Moose Meat, Baked Poteitr, Oatmeal, Oat Flour, Oat Milk, Pancakes, Oven Pancake, Kale Chips, Fish Soup, Seal Meat Soup and Smoked Fish.
  • New plantables: Kale, Oats, Poteitr and Timberwood, so the farm feeding this table changes too.
  • A Smoker was added as a Cauldron extension, which is where the smoked foods come from, not from this table.
  • The Serving Tray menu was overhauled in the same patch, alongside the hammer menu.

The Deep North recipe quantities are still settling as the community data catches up with the release, so the exact ingredient counts for Northern Morning Fare are not listed above rather than guessed at. Everything else on this page is current for 1.0.

Feeding a crew, not just a Viking

A feast is ten servings shared from one platter, which only pays off when there are other people standing around it. If your world lives on somebody’s machine and dies when they log off, the feast is the first thing that stops being worth the Bog Witch spice. A Valheim server hosting world stays up between sessions, so the kitchen you built, the farm that feeds it, and the crew that eats from it are all still there tomorrow.
